At the Y, we are
working toward a
brighter tomorrow.

Dear YMCA Family and Friends,

For most of us, 2020 was a year unlike any experienced within our lifetime. It was especially difficult for the most vulnerable among us. Loss of income from closed or reduced businesses impacted many families throughout Silicon Valley. Parents struggled to ensure their children had healthy meals and educational support, while schools remained closed for on-site learning. Numerous seniors experienced isolation and struggled to access nutritious food. Individuals coping with chronic disease weren’t able to attend in-person programs to bolster their recovery.

Our 2020 Community Impact Report focuses on resiliency and how our Y responded to the critical needs that confronted us. We persevered and remained steadfast in our focus of ensuring youth, adults, and families had the nourishment, strength, and support they needed to be resilient and thrive as we anticipate a brighter future.

While our collective challenges are far from over, we hope you draw strength from learning more about how the Y has continued to be a force of positive impact in our community with the help of our volunteers, members, and donors.

With gratitude and hope for a healthy tomorrow,

Enduring Impact

From preventing summer learning loss for low-income children to helping cancer survivors regain their strength and stamina, or from ensuring that families have positive spaces to play together to teaching kids to be safe around water and build their swimming skills‚ the Y has been there for our neighbors. Even though the Y may look a little different right now, we are still an anchor for our community, just like we’ve always been.

Responding to the Crisis

When the pandemic emerged, the YMCA shifted its efforts to provide critical programs and services. Because our Y is embedded in so many communities throughout Silicon Valley and is recognized as one of the strongest community service organizations in the area, we were called upon to be a partner in the response to COVID-19.

Feeding Families

During this time of crisis, families needed support more than ever to make ends meet, with some families making tough choices between paying for rent or food. In response, the Y expanded hunger relief efforts to meet this increased demand. As a USDA food program sponsor, the Y distributed more than 4,300 meals and snacks daily at sites set-up at schools, Y branches, and community partner locations.

37 food distribution sites for youth and 2 sites for seniors.

Supporting Students

Pandemic related school closures placed additional strain on families from all walks of life. The Y offered in-person and virtual Learning Labs during the school day that addressed urgent childcare needs for parents and provided students with distance learning and homework support; access to technology and Wi-Fi; healthy meals; and much needed daily physical activity and social time.

Operating at 34 sites, engaging up to 1,658 youth daily.

Helping Households

In addition to providing meals and educational support, the Y provided virtual lessons and resources through Project Cornerstone that allowed families to continue promoting positive character development at home and provided tools to better deal with stress associated with the current crisis, including workshops for parents focused on distance learning tips and support.

Project Cornerstone partners with more than 300 schools and community organizations.

Innovative Wellness Solutions

Isabel's Story

Working mom Grace Ortiz was unsure how to keep her daughter Isabel on track in school when the pandemic began. Fortunately, the family was offered the chance to participate in Y Learning Labs for Super Scholars, which helped Isabel to stay focused in school during the pandemic Today, she is not only thriving academically, but socially and emotionally happier thanks to the supportive staff and friendly peers found at the Y Learning Labs.

Brian and Andrea's Story

For decades, married couple Brian and Andrea have enjoyed frequent visits to the YMCA– and during COVID-19 was no exception. Adapting to a lack of socialization in the midst of the pandemic and the added responsibility as caretakers for their aging mothers, 2020 was a tough adjustment. Brian and Andrea jumped on the opportunity to continue exercising with the Y when Virtual classes became available, and were able to maintain their fitness routines and feel connected to the community of friends. They found feelings of health, vitality, and belonging at the Y, helping them through a challenging phase of life.

Fiscal Stewardship in Challenging Times

YMCA of Silicon Valley has consistently been a fiscally strong organization, even earning a perfect rating on Charity Navigator. Like most nonprofit organizations, the Y experienced challenges as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. However, our history of exceptional fiscal management coupled with strong fundraising and strategic leadership, allowed the Y to pivot and provide critical programs and services to promote resiliency in kids, families, and individuals throughout the pandemic. We are grateful for all who supported and contributed to enable the Y to continue to serve our community.
