Dear YMCA Friends,

Together we are stronger. This is what we celebrate in our Y’s 2021 Community Impact Report – Better Together. As the challenges of the pandemic have continued, we are inspired by the power of working together to meet our community’s greatest needs. By demonstrating our Y values, empowering our amazing team of staff and supporters, and strengthening our partnerships, we have discovered new ways to positively impact our community. This impact that we have made possible together gives us great hope and optimism for the future.

You have been a vital partner in ensuring our Y delivers its core Y programs along with finding different ways to respond to our community’s emerging needs. Through it all, our members, staff, volunteers, donors, and other dedicated community organizations have joined in the effort to advance new avenues of service.

As we continue to re-build and evolve our programs and network of services, we are grateful to you, our valuable partners. The strength that comes from working together makes the challenging possible.

Thank you for joining us in caring for our community,

Enduring Impact

Our Y has been strengthening the Silicon Valley community for over 150 years. In 2021, we built on our legacy through partnerships that made us stronger together. We are especially proud of how together, through a challenging year, we improved the health of our members; engaged and empowered our youth; and nourished our neighbors.

Strengthening Our Community

Our Y continues to play a critical role during these challenging times, responding and adapting to emerging community needs. Our reach and impact is extended by leveraging deep partnerships with other community organizations.

Nourishing Families

Many families living in Silicon Valley rely on free or low-cost school lunch programs. For one in four kids in Santa Clara County, a school break can also mean going hungry. Our Y is a USDA food program sponsor, distributing meals and snacks to youth and their families at school sites, Y branches, and community partner locations. Due to conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic such as shelter in place, older adults’ access to fresh and healthy meals was compromised, and we were proud to have expanded our food distribution to include our vulnerable seniors.

Supporting Learning

Too many students in our community face an achievement gap that keeps them from succeeding in school, especially those children from under-resourced households. Our Y’s academic enrichment programs provide a safe place for all children to reach their fullest potential, promote learning recovery, and provide a space to connect and engage with their peers.

Building UPstanders

In addition to providing meals and educational support, the Y provided virtual lessons and resources through YMCA Project Cornerstone that allowed families to continue promoting positive character development at home and provided tools to better deal with stress associated with the current crisis, including workshops for parents focused on distance learning tips and support.

Partners In Health

While many people join the Y to get or stay in shape, longtime members know that Y membership is not only about health and wellness, but also about community care and support. When Tom Butts, a lifelong triathlete, found himself in the hospital for over 100 days fighting COVID-19, his Y community was there to support him and his wife. The Y continues to stand by Tom on his road to recovery - and his goal to return to triathlete life - every step of the way.

TOM’S STORY

Empowering Youth

Teens today are coping with a variety of challenges, including the risks of drug and alcohol abuse and mental health. Throughout the last two years, Asian American Community Involvement (AACI) partnered with our YMCA to address these risks because of our extensive experience in Teen Leadership program development. Through this partnership, the YMCA AACI Youth Leadership Council Advisor team empowered teens, like John, to raise awareness among their peers about these issues in a program defined, led, and produced by teens themselves.

JOHN’S STORY

Champions For Kids

The Taylor family, like many others, grappled with the challenges of virtual schooling. Their two young sons struggled with distance learning and they needed help. Our Summer Champion donors issued a challenge to the community that raised over $1.2 Million to support youth and their families through enrichment programs and food distribution. Working families like the Taylors, benefitted from our Summer Learning Program where their sons connected with peers and engaged in a curriculum that helped them advance academically. By partnering with our donor community, we were able to offer this vital resource to 400 families like the Taylors.

THE TAYLOR’S STORY

Commitment to Equity

YMCA of Silicon Valley board and staff leaders established goals to strengthen our collective efforts to build a more equitable Y and community. The following Commitment to Equity statement embodies our promise:

YMCA of Silicon Valley is committed to advancing equity for all so that you have an opportunity to reach your full potential and live life to its fullest. We nurture and intentionally promote a culture free of bias and injustice. We recognize the uniqueness of each individual person and celebrate all dimensions of diversity. We are committed to dismantling oppressive systems and hold ourselves accountable to identify and put in place long term policies designed to eliminate racism and inequity. You are valued and respected by the Y.

Community voice will inform
Y programs and engagement

The Y holds regular Community Town Halls throughout our service area to broaden community input and inform actions to support equity and inclusion.

Expanding diversity in
volunteer and staff leadership

Staff will reflect the community and have leadership development opportunities. Currently 57% of Y leadership positions are held by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color). By 2023, 40% of the volunteer board will be people of color. Currently the Y board is 25% BIPOC.

Maintain focus on
sustained and intentional action

The Y conducts ongoing review of Y policies and practices to ensure equitable and inclusive systems.

Responsible, Resourceful Leadership

YMCA of Silicon Valley is proud of our consistently high ratings on Charity Navigator and Guidestar. With a history of strong fiscal management and fundraising the Y has strategically managed through these challenging times and continued to respond to emerging needs in our community. We provided critical programs and services to ensure our kids, families, and individuals have what they need to thrive.
