Dear YMCA Friends,

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of YMCA of Silicon Valley, we are proud to share our 2023 Impact Report with you, a testament to the incredible strides we’ve made together in bringing positive change to our community. The accomplishments within showcase our shared commitment to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Throughout the year, 81,426 youth were inspired to discover new passions and develop new skills at activities like Y’s innovation challenge “Thingamajig”, sports and STEM camps, and outdoor education at Camp Campbell. Over 55,000 members were connected to health and wellness programs to help them thrive, including our Diabetes Prevention Program, Parkinson’s Exercise Program, and LiveStrong at the Y. Lastly, we reimagined programs to ensure the Y is a place for everyone, including piloting a program to offer water safety lessons to youth with neuro-diversities.

These collective achievements were only made possible by our passionate supporters, our dedicated team of staff and leadership volunteers, and the communities we serve. As we reflect on the past year, we extend our gratitude to all who have contributed to our Y’s successes. Together, we look forward to building a future where our impact continues to resonate and uplift lives.

Enduring Impact

Our Y has been strengthening the Silicon Valley community for 157 years and counting. In 2023, we built on our legacy through partnerships that made us stronger together. We are especially proud of how together, with the help of our partners, stakeholders and volunteers, we improved the health of our members; engaged and empowered our youth; and nourished our neighbors.

Strengthening Our Community

Our Y is a place where people can come together, connect with one another, be inspired, and reimagine what is possible for themselves and their community. We create transformative experiences for our members and our entire community. Our reach and impact is extended by leveraging deep partnerships with other community organizations.

Nourishing Families

Many families living in Silicon Valley rely on free or low-cost school meal programs. One in four kids are food insecure or may not know where their next meal is coming from in Santa Clara County. A school break can mean going hungry. Our Y is a USDA food program sponsor, distributing meals and snacks to youth and their families at after school and summer sites, Y branches and community partner locations. In our efforts to combat hunger and social isolation, we are proud to include food distribution and meals served to older adults and vulnerable seniors.

Supporting Learning

Too many students in our community face an achievement gap that keeps them from succeeding in school, especially those children from under-resourced households. Our Y’s academic enrichment programs provide a safe place for all children to reach their fullest potential, promote learning recovery, and provide a space to connect and engage with their peers.

Reaching Our Youth

YMCA Project Cornerstone’s programs and resources address the noticeable increase in anxiety, depression, and loneliness seen among youth and adults by giving them a framework for personal development and success, establishing healthy developmental relationships with others, and creating safe, supportive, and affirming families, schools, and communities.

Feeding Communities

The YMCA's Senior Nutrition program in Gilroy and Morgan Hill offers a lifeline for seniors facing food insecurity. Each day, seniors gather for hot, nutritious meals, fostering a vibrant community filled with laughter and friendship. Beyond providing sustenance, the program creates a supportive environment where seniors feel valued and empowered to live fuller lives.

"I've seen firsthand the incredible impact of our Senior Nutrition food program," shared Leo Khooshabeh, Mt Madonna YMCA's Senior Nutrition Program Director. "I'm proud to be part of a team dedicated to nourishing both body and soul, and witnessing the transformative power of compassion and community."

Expanding Young Minds

The YMCA Thingamajig® Invention Convention fosters and sustains excitement for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) exploration during the summer – opening the doors to strategic thinking, creative expression, and promising careers. This past summer, over 600 Y Camp youth from Redwood City to Gilroy gathered together to create and present their innovations that solved practical everyday problems using only 100% recycled materials.

In the words of Martin, one of our young Thingamajig participants, "I cannot believe I won, this is the best camp day ever!"

Rebuilding Hope

When 70-year-old Elenor had a small stroke, she felt hopeless and found each day a challenge. She discovered that the YMCA in her neighborhood offered a class on Stroke Awareness helping stroke survivors rebuild themselves in an atmosphere of support and community. Elenor was overjoyed with the results. "It’s a wonderful place to reclaim your life," she says. "I feel like there’s hope. The Y is so community-focused... I just wish I started years ago.”

Commitment to Equity

YMCA of Silicon Valley board and staff leaders established goals to strengthen our collective efforts to build a more equitable Y and community. The following Commitment to Equity statement embodies our promise:

YMCA of Silicon Valley is committed to advancing equity for all so that you have an opportunity to reach your full potential and live life to its fullest. We nurture and intentionally promote a culture free of bias and injustice. We recognize the uniqueness of each individual person and celebrate all dimensions of diversity. We are committed to dismantling oppressive systems and hold ourselves accountable to identify and put in place long term policies designed to eliminate racism and inequity. You are valued and respected by the Y.

Responsible, Resourceful Leadership

YMCA of Silicon Valley is proud of our consistently high ratings on Charity Navigator and Guidestar.
